Shorter Greek Version Follows
There is a couple of files on every Windows 7 machine that can potentially take up a huge amount of gigs on your hard drive. These are the hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys files. They’re both system files so if you attempt to delete them, and chances are that you’ve already tried that, you’ll fail; as you probably already know by now.
The thing is that the system uses these two files for good reason.
1. pagefile.sys is the file which the system uses as virtual memory. If you have a memory managed file, it’s size can grow to extreme proportions. even if you have a huge hard drive, you probably dont want such a file to be eating up your space. Now, if you have a system with limited memory (RAM), I’d propose you to let that file be. You see, on low end machines, the system will store data on that file and use it as extended memory beyond your available RAM. If you have more than 4 gigs of memory however, then you will probably never need this file (unless you’re into heavy programming or image/video manipulation, in which cases however, you’d probably know already what to do with that file). So, if you’re certain that your everyday activities on your machine can be carried out without this virtual memory, you can follow the steps below to eliminate this file from your system, and in doing so, speed up your overall experience (the file is good for extending the physical memory but it will always be slower than the real thing so, if you deny the system to use it, it will have to store everything on the physical RAM. It will be bunches faster, until you overload it and then of course, you’ll have a huge brinck in your hands).
i. windows key
ii. type in “advanced system settings” and click on the option “view advaned system settings” (otherwise, follow this: control panel -> system -> advanced system settings)
iii. click on “settings” on the “advanced -> performance” tab
iv. click on the “advanced” tab, then on the “change” button
v. select your hard drive and click on the radio button next to the “no paging file”
vi. DONT FORGER to click on “set” before clicking on OK. Close all the remaining open windows and you’re good to go. Remember that you will have to restart the machine before the new settings are applied
2. hiberfil.sys is the file used to save the current machine state and it is used for hibernation of the system. As soon as the system is restarted, the previous state is read from that file and your system returns exactly where you were before going into hibernation. If you’re sure that you’re not going to be entering hibernation however, you can quite easily and safely remove that file as well.
i. windows key
ii. type in “cmd” followed by enter
iii. type in “powercfg -h off”
iv. type in “exit” and you’re all set.

Σε περίπτωση που θέλουμε να σβήσουμε τα αρχεία hiberfil.sys και pagefile.sys από το σύστημά μας πρέπει να κάνουμε τα παρακάτω
1. pagefile.sys (χρησιμοποιείται από το σύστημα σαν επέκταση της φυσικής μνήμης RAM που έχει ο υπολογιστής μας. Σε περίπτωση που έχουμε λιγότερη από 4Giga RAM δεν είναι πολύ έξυπνο να το σβήσουμε αφού σε αυτήν την περίπτωση πολύ συχνά ο υπολογιστής μας θα ξεμένει από μνήμη. Αν όμως έχουμε αρκετή φυσική μνήμη, μπορούμε να το σβήσουμε με τον παρακάτω τρόπο και ταυτόχρονα να επιταχύνουμε τον υπολογιστή μας αφού η χρήση της φυσικής μνήμης είναι σαφώς ταχύτερη από την πρόσβαση στο συγκεκριμένο αρχείο).
i. στον πίνακα ελέγχου (control panel) επιλέγουμε το σύστημα (system) και στο παράθυρο που ανοίγει, στα αριστερά, επιλέγουμε τις Προχωρημένες Ρυθμίσεις Συστήματος (advanced system settings).
ii. επιλέγουμε “ρυθμίσεις” (settings) στην καρτέλα “προχωρημένες ρυθμίσεις”
iii. επιλέγουμε “προχωρημένες” και μετά πατάμε το κουμπί που λέει “αλλαγή”
iv. επιλέγουμε το σκληρό δίσκο που επιθυμούμε, κάνουμε κλικ στο ραδιόκουμπο που λέει “χωρίς χρήση αρχείου pagefile”
v. δεν ξεχνάμε να πατήσουμε το SET δίπλα στην επιλογή μας και μετά OK. κλείνουμε τα παράθυρα που έχουν μείνει ανοιχτά και μετά την επανεκκίνηση του υπολογιστή μας, δε θα έχουμε πλέον αυτό το αρχείο.
2. hiberfil.sys είναι το αρχείο που χρησιμοποιεί ο υπολογιστής για να σώσει την κατάσταση στην οποία βρίσκεται τη στιγμή που μπαίνει σε νάρκη (hibernation). Αν δε χρησιμοποιούμε αυτή τη λειτουργία, μπορούμε εύκολα και ασφαλώς να σβήσουμε αυτό το αρχείο:
i. στο αρχικό μενού πληκτρολογούμε cmd και εκτελούμε την επιλοχή που εμφανίζεται (cmd.exe)
ii. στη μαύρη οθόνη πληκτρολογούμε την εντολή “powercfg -h off”
iii. πληκτρολογούμε “exit” και επιστρέφουμε στα windows όπου πλέον δεν υπάρχει το συγκεκριμένο αρχείο.
